24401 My dog and only Friend Juno – Artwork story 

 Ping Lian Yeak is an autistic savant artist, with severe limitations in social, behavioral and communication skills. He has very limited ability to speak and is considered non-verbal. Ping Lian does not have any friends, and his father passed away from a sudden heart attack when Ping Lian was only 10 years old. Ping Lian lost his dad and only male friend. Although Ping Lian has two sisters, who love him dearly, they are busy with their own lives.

As Ping Lian has aged, and grown physically, his intellectual level and understanding of life has not matured. He continues living “in his own world”. As his sisters and cousins mature, the gap between them and Ping Lian has become larger and larger. To me, Ping Lian appears lonely, although I do not know if he actually identifies with that feeling. Juno, has become Ping Lian’s only friend. She is cool, chill and calm, and always happy around Ping Lian. Juno sits on Ping Lian's lap at the back of the car when we go for a drive. Some times Ping Lian even carries her at the back of the car seat while Juno watches through the car window.

 In the morning before Ping Lian wakes up, Juno will come to his room to say hello. She has a unique way and body language to say hello to people and to Ping Lian. Often, if Ping Lian does not get up, she will lay down on the floor and wait for ping Lian to get up.

 Juno allows Ping Lian to take her for a walk. She is always calm and obedient as Ping Lian holds her leash.

 Aside from Ping Lian’s mother, Juno has been Ping Lian’s best company. Thus, Juno is considered his only friend. As sad as that may sound, Ping Lian’s Mum is always positive. She constantly tells Ping Lian, “You are so lucky, you have a great friend like Juno.” Ping Lian lives in a very simple world. His paintings of animals portray happiness, as his animals appear to be smiling. In this painting “My Only Friend Juno”, Juno is smiling too.

 One of Ping Lian Yeak’s Mum’s motto is  “Happiness is a choice and is a conscious choice, and needs effort”. Regardless of what condition and situation we are in; to stay happy and maintain a positive outlook within yourself is most important.. Happiness is not what others or the world impose on you.
